A few months ago I was on the shop floor at Oracle when a gorgeous woman walked in. She was dressed head-to-toe in black, had a beautiful medicine bag around her neck and was wearing the most incredible jewelry. I greeted her as I normally would, but then had to consciously keep myself from staring because she looked amazing and I didn't want to creep her out. I got to take a closer look at her exquisite rings and necklaces when I was ringing her up and because I am 35% magpie and 65% goblin, I finally broke down and asked her where her jewelry was from.

"Evil Pawn Jewelry. I made them!", she replied. 

I immediately begged her for her contact information, hoping that I could convince her to let us carry her jewelry and medicine bags in the shop. Through communicating with Faith over the following months, I learned so much about her - not only her art but also the extensive healing nature and thought that goes into each piece. This isn't surprising, if you follow her instagram account, Faith writes so beautifully about the significance of each piece and includes insight into her creative process, her own family history and her practice as a healer.

We are so proud and excited to have Evil Pawn Jewelry in Oracle, it's an honor for us - we have pendant necklaces, rings, bracelets, Crow Wheel Amulets and vegan leather medicine bags  - come see this incredible woman's work and prepare to adorn yourself in metal!!

{ THREE YEARS! }

Holy smokes Y'all. 

This week marks our third year of being open for business - it's super hard for me to believe, three years sounds like a long time to me, but it has flown by. And I'm learning more and more each day - which maybe seems like DURR, OF COURSE - but truly, each day brings a new lesson and educational opportunity. You think you know what's up, and then Alessandra and Christina are in the back with a pile of python bones, or a wallaby, or a freaking cavy (a member of the rodent family and animal which previously I had never heard of before in my life) skeleton like it's no big deal.

A word on Alessandra, AKA The Bone Wizard, since I mentioned her. We thought she was incredible when we first laid eyes on her in 2013 and boy oh boy are we lucky she liked us back! Alessandra Dzuba, you may know, is not only the brains and dexterous hands behind many of our beautiful natural science specimens, but she is also a phenomenal fine artist (who somehow manages to exhibit her work regularly, probably because she is a wizard and can manipulate the Space Time Continuum). This is also a fine time to mention Carrie, who continues to grow and evolve at a suspiciously inhuman rate (my money is on Aliens). When we began this adventure, Carrie was juggling a full-time gig as a therapist and raising two young children while also keeping natural science specimens in stock and the lights on at Oracle. Somehow during all this she has also managed to learn and integrate numerology and astrology into her counseling practice - a shining example of developing and following her intuition in a holistic way. If you know Carrie, you already know that she is a badass, but you may not know that she does THIS. 

We have been so fortunate to have so many incredible people intern and apprentice with us at Oracle. We appreciate your intellect, your creativity, your talent and your unflinching ability to get your hands dirty with animal remains. We are so grateful and happy that you found us!

A bunch of weirdos like us could only have thrived in this kind of environment, so we are pretty dang lucky. Cheers for three years!!

{ Pinning + Framing Class - July 9th }

Do you have plans this Saturday? No? Well, you should definitely come take our Butterfly Pinning and framing class this weekend! 

Our butterfly pinning and framing class will introduce you to the basics of spreading and preserving your own butterfly specimen! We provide two butterflies, a lovely wooden frame with glass for presentation, as well as all of the tools required - just bring yourself! Professional instruction and hands-on demonstrations for re-hydrating, posing and preserving your butterfly will be provided. You will also learn framing and display techniques for your butterfly during the first class installment.

*Because it takes a while to dry - students will need to come back to pick up their finished piece - and you leave the class with a specimen that you spread, posed and framed yourself!

{ The Traveling Alchemist }

We are BEYOND excited about this - Tyler Thrasher is coming to KC this Friday, June 24th for a meet up at Oracle!! This exhibit, The Traveling Alchemist, consists of crystalized insects, shells, and skulls created by Thrasher, as well as prints of his work for sale. We have long been huge fans of his work - a delicate marriage of science and art resulting in impossibly beautiful, unique pieces. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the artist, to see his fantastic artwork in person - and to add a piece to your own art collection!

{ Numerology Happy Hour! }

NUMEROLOGY HAPPY HOUR - JUNE 21ST, TUESDAY 4:30-6:30 - $10

We are having our Numerology Happy Hour on Tuesday, June 21 at 4:30-6:30 pm! Our resident Potions Master, Carrie Parker will be offering numerology readings during the Hour of Happy! *But what IS numerology, you may be asking (it's okay, I had to ask too)?

Well, Numerology is the study of numbers and the occult manner in which they reflect certain aptitudes and character tendencies as part of the greater, cosmic plan. The sum of the numbers in your birth date and the sum value derived from the letters in your birth name provide particular vibrations. Similarly, each phonetic letter has a numeric value that provides a related cosmic vibration. All of these numbers combine to reveal a great deal about a person's character, purpose in life, what motivates them and where their talents may lie. 

In short, it's another way to gain some self-introspection - which I find always washes down a little easier with cocktails and friends!

ENSEMBLE IBÉRICA performs the music of Ibéria (Spain and Portugal) and the colonial Americas. Programs explore diverse time periods, styles and locations including the Spanish baroque, Portuguese fado and Argentine tango. The Ensemble features extraordinary musicians from classical, jazz and folk music traditions from around the world.
