Why raise funds for Ukraine?

This is more than just a humanitarian raffle; I am Ukrainian and my family has suffered at the hands of Russia’s government in the past and present. My grandparents were from Lviv Oblast and the Carpathian Mountains. This war is not new to my family, and with some family still residing in Lviv, we are reliving our grandparents past. When my grandparents were just children, they barely survived due to the terror-famine perpetrated by the USSR, known as the Holodomor Genocide, where 3.5-5 million lives were lost. Then, as young adults, they were stolen from their families and sent away to forced labor camps. My grandfather, a Ukrainian historian, took to the streets to stand up against the hate, discrimination, and book burnings. He rewrote the books the Russians were trying to erase, preserving Ukrainian culture and history. For that, he was sent to forced labor camps and then eventually Auschwitz. After surviving these awful hardships, my grandfather vowed to always stand up against hate and continued his work preserving Ukrainian culture and history as a published author, History PhD, Holocaust survivor, and activist up until the end at his 100th birthday. The Russian government is once again trying erase Ukraine and its vibrant culture, history, and beautiful language. I hope I can follow in my dido Bohdan’s footsteps in the only way that I know, through art. I donated an original piece made specifically for this raffle, of what Ukraine’s resilience and my heritage means to me.

We are reliving what happened in the past and watching yet another genocide of the Ukrainian people and culture. This war has been an underlying fear for decades and it is important to see what it truly is, a genocide. Please help us help Ukraine in their dire need and not let hate win.
